Rare 1914-18 French WW1 Croix de Guerre awarded for Gallantry (Bravery) in combat during WW1, there were 4 types awarded with the following dates on the reverse 1914-15, 1914-16, 1914-17 and 1914-18. This French soldier was awarded the Star attachment for Gallantry.
Very nice example as awarded for extraordinary feats of Gallantry against German Imperial Forces by a heroic French soldier.
The medal consists of a bronze cross pattée with stippled arms, with crossed swords between the arms, on scroll and laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing a female head facing right representing the French Republic within a ring inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’ and decorated with laurel leaves below; the reverse with a circular central medallion with the date 1914-1918.
Recipients of the Legion d'Honneur and Medaille Militaire were automatically eligible to receive the Croix de Guerre. Foreign nationals were similarly eligible to receive the Croix de Guerre, as were individual units.
